1. UNTFHS-Strengthening Human Security by Enhancing Resilience to NATURAL Disasters and Climate-Related Threats in Ngororero District


The main project objective is to strengthen human security, enhance resilience, and improve disaster risk management of high-risk communities and most vulnerable populations of Ngororero District.

The additional objective include to reduce the impact of natural disasters to communities, and their livelihoods and assets through risk mitigation measures and enhancing preparedness capacities in 2 Sectors (Sovu and Kabaya) 


2. Preparedness for Resilient Recovery Project

Under the Project outputs, different achievements have been registered in regard to Training and awareness raising:

1. Training on Preparedness for Recovery and Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA)

2. Recovery framework preparation and operationalization


3. Environmental Protection in and around Refugee Camps Project

Rwanda is faced with wide-ranging challenges and problems of environmental degradation. Home to about 11 million people, Rwanda is among the most densely populated country in Africa.

Influx of refugees adds to this population density bur¬den and reinforces the already intense population pressure on the environment causing depletion of natural resources as well as exacerbating land scarcity problems.


4. Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) Project Rapid Response in Gakenke District

Over the period from 7 to 8 May 2016, a disaster caused by the landslide, heavy rains with strong wind in Northern Province specifically in Gakenke District occurred and caused 34 deaths, complete destruction of 2,317 houses, partial destruction of 1,500 houses, destruction of the various infrastructures including 58 km of roads, 29 bridges, 1425 households, dam¬age of 3,447 hectare of agricultural land with various crops such as rice, beans and maize, forest and the loss of 700 livestock among others.

Project Objectives

Restoration of critical community infrastructures and emergency off–farm livelihoods for landslide affected population in GAKENKE District.


5. Building National and Local Capacities for Disaster Risk Management in Rwanda


The Project “Building National and Local Capacities for Disaster Risk Management in Rwanda” is implemented by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees (MIDIMAR) in partnership with UNDP which provides funding and technical expertise.

 Project Objectives

1. Developing capacities for Disaster Risk Management at all levels of the three-tiers i.e. enabling environment,       organizational and individual levels.

2. Supporting the Government of Rwanda’s will to strengthen its Disaster Risk Management (DRM) capacity,           enhance preparedness and reduce risks, and achieve its global commitment to the Hyogo Framework for           Action (HFA) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
